The Refuge of Hope is a Christ centered facility for women who are in times of need. It offers programming of various kinds to assist these women and their children get back to an independent life. Safety and security is a priority at this shelter. Potential candidates would be displaced women and women with children due to a natural or personal disaster, fire, those without any housing, and any woman or woman with children who has found themselves with no safe dwelling to live in. The Refuge of Hope is a temporary solution for these and possibly other examples. The length of stay depends on the effort put forth to allow us to help them find a permanent housing arrangement. The first day a woman arrives will be working to find her more permanent housing. We will partner with local agencies and organizations that specialize in securing housing, employment, education and provisions. If a woman in our shelter shows no sign of trying to find permanent housing, their length of stay will be limited to 14 days. All women who come to the Refuge escaping domestic violence will be escorted to Genesis. If this issue is discovered in the ensuing days after arrival, she will be escorted to Genesis as soon as possible. All women with a proclaimed or noticeable drug or alcohol dependency will be directed to appropriate drug rehab facilities in our area. Any who come to us detoxing from a substance will be taken to the local hospital for evaluation.
No men are allowed on the premises unless at the direction of the staff. Any men loitering outside of the back or front of the shelter will be directed to leave. Those who do not comply will be handed over to the authorities. The staff will not tolerate any violence in or outside of our shelter. Authorities will be called if this occurs and we will press any charges necessary to ensure it will not happen again.
The shelter will be maintained in the utmost condition at all times, both inside and out. The front entrance and the rear exit will be swept regularly and all trash removed. Both the front and back will be well lit 24 hours a day. The shelter will tolerate no illegal drugs or any form or alcohol on the premises. This applies to both that which is carried in and that which has been smoked, huffed, ingested or injected. Any woman who appears to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be subjected to a drug or alcohol screen before being allowed into the facility. If this request is refused, the woman will be asked to leave. Any woman or child caught with these items on their person while staying at the shelter will be discharged immediately and authorities notified.
The Refuge is to be a place of hope for a new beginning or a fresh start. Its intention is to grow the woman into a life that contributes to our community and sustains her family. It is not sleeping rooms or a flop house. The Refuge of Hope is a place where a woman with or without children can find hope, care and sound direction to turn her life around. Our intent for the shelter is to be a partial answer to the growing population in our community who are under-served. We want to work in tandem with local agencies, organizations and businesses to help these women find a new life. We will not allow the shelter to be a burden on our community. It is our intention to be a blessing and to meet a need in our community.
